When Mush Mode is turned on, Goombas can act as notes.

Koopa Troopas need to be hit twice - after the first time they hide in their shell.

In later songs, you need to avoid stepping on certain objects (such as the spikes in this icy level)

You can also convert notes to coins using a switch that sometimes appears onscreen.

The game regularly gives you the opportunity to shop for items.

There is also a freeplay mode, which allows you to pick any song at any difficulty.
